Cheney Hospitalized; Bush Briefly Takes Over as President

Washington, DC  |  66-year-old Dick Cheney is resting at home after being treated for an irregular heart beat yesterday at George Washington University Hospital.

Cheney received cardioversion - delivery of an electric impulse to the heart - which is a standard treatment for atrial fibrillation performed as an outpatient procedure.

George W. Bush was awakened early from his afternoon nap at the White House and briefed on the situation. Bush appeared "disoriented and apprehesive" for several minutes, but then directed aides to send his best wishes to the Cheney family. Bush then tried to read for a while, but soon dropped off back to sleep.

Doctors reported Cheney's procedure "went smoothly and without complication" and he returned home after spending almost three hours at the hospital.
