Fictional Bush Assassination Movie Draws Little Enthusiasm
Chicago, IL | Death of a President, a controversial film imagining the October 2007 assassination of President George W. Bush, has flopped at the box office, grossing less than $300,000 in its first weekend.
Film industry analysts attribute the poor response to a growing number of Americans who would prefer to wait a year and see the actual documentary.
"We are certainly not suggesting that someone actually assassinate President Bush," said Reve Wunschdenker, co-chair of the National Association of Americans Suggesting that Someone Actually Assassinate President Bush (NAASSAAPB), "because it's illegal to say that."
The release has been boycotted at over 16,000 American movie screens, and several major broadcast outlets have declined to run promotional spots.
Newmarket Films distribution chief Richard Abramowitz lamented, "In hindsight, I guess it's just hard to get people interested in something that's been faked, like all these political ads we've been seeing lately."
