U.S. Minorities Breathe Sigh of Relief

Philadelphia, MS  |  The conviction of Edgar Ray Killen has finally closed an unfortunate chapter in the Nation's history.

Edgar Ray Killen The 80-year-old Baptist preacher and former Ku Klux Klan leader received the 60-year maximum for his role in the 1964 murders of three civil-rights workers in Mississippi. The trial marks a welcome end to prejudice and racial tension throughout the United States.

Killen was wheeled out of the courtroom on a stretcher and is expected to serve at least 15 minutes of his prison term.

His sentence follows on the heels of last week's landmark U.S. Senate resolution apologizing for its 100-year failure to pass Federal anti-lynching laws.

"We show is happyfied dat de gubbaments be 79.5% sorry fo all oh dem hangins," exclaimed one jubilant negro.
