Continuing a 57-year tradition, President Bush formally issues a pardon for two Thanksgiving turkeys, and releases them on his Crawford ranch

President Bush Issues 'Reprieve' for Thanksgiving Turkeys

Crawford, TX  |  In what has become an annual holiday tradition, President Bush pardoned the nation's symbolic Thanksgiving birds in a quiet ceremony Thursday at the Bush family ranch in Crawford, Texas.

The official turkey, named Butter by the President, and the back-up bird, named Balls, were "rescued" on Wednesday from a local Piggly Wiggly by Bush himself.

Each weighed an average of 18 pounds, including the giblets.

The President sited this year's pardons as especially appropriate, saying the act represented his administration's dedication to tolerance and personal freedom.

The Crawford cooking staff expressed some concern about what they'd now serve for dinner, but guaranteed they would have plenty of pretzels on hand for the Cowboys-Bears football game later in the afternoon.
