Lester Maddox Ascends Unto Heaven
Senator Strom Thurmond, Governor Lester Maddox and Mayor Maynard Jackson are waiting in line together at the Pearly Gates. The Senator is summoned forward.
Sir, what is your name?" asks Saint Peter.
"My name is Strom Thurmond and I beg forgiveness for my sins," replies the Senator.
After leafing through the pages of a gigantic book, reviewing Thurmond's life on Earth, Saint Peter shakes his head sadly and reports, "Your record is tarnished by bigotry and hatred. For so many years, you strove to demoralize and subjugate an entire people and, by your example, helped to legitimize injustice and violence. These mortal sins cannot be erased simply by repenting later in life."
With a loud clap of thunder, Thurmond is sent to Hell.
Next, Saint Peter motions for Lester Maddox to step forward. "Sir, what is your name?" he asks.
The crafty old Governor replies, "My name is Maynard Jackson and I beg forgiveness for my sins."
But the Mayor interrupts, insisting, "Saint Peter, I apologize for speaking out of turn, but I'm Maynard Jackson."
Maddox angrily snaps back, "Aw come on, Pete. Who are you gonna believe? Me, or that goddamn nigger?"
