Fox Publicizes New Show with Massive Email Campaign
Joe Nigerian, The Mother of All Reality Shows
New York City, NY | You've probably received at least one email about the forthcoming Fox reality show, Joe Nigerian. But just in case you haven't: It's basically a hybrid of proven successes like The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, The Mole and Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire.
Contestants are contacted via email by Moshood Nzanga Sese Seko Kabila Audu Abacha Mobuto, or some variation, who identifies himself or herself as the widow or son or bank account manager or legal representative of exiled and/or deceased former Congo royalty.
The recipients (or "marks") are begged for assistance in transferring funds from somewhere in Europe or Africa, eventually requiring their personal data such as address, phone number, credit card and bank account information, as well as a sizable cash advance.
The greedy rubes then jet off to Lagos for the chance to share an "inheritance" ranging from 22 million to 700 million dollars, whereupon Fox Reality Programming Chief Mike Darnell meets them at the airport to reveal they've been the gullible victim of a flim-flam.
The marketing department has been quietly sending out thousands of e-solicitations, and the response is described as "tremendous." Fox Entertainment President Gail Berman says that, to her knowledge, this is the first show to be promoted exclusively by mass email.
Unlike last season's blockbuster hit Joe Millionaire, Berman says this won't just be a one-shot deal. "There are enough morons out there to run this scam over and over. And there are millions of other morons who will keep watching it on television."
