Chocolate Factory a Mixed Blessing
for Hershey
Hershey, PA | Hershey Chocolate's centennial celebration this month marks 100 years of sweet success. But for some residents, living in the factory's shadow leaves a bad taste in their mouths.
Milton S. Hershey left his mark on the community in more ways than one. A quick drive through the neighborhood reveals the founder's peculiar fetish. Take the Poop Chute exit off Hershey Highway, turn south on Pinch-a-Loaf Parkway, and just past Brown Biscuit Boulevard you'll find Skid Mark Park.
It is unclear why Milton Hershey never incorporated his model town into a borough. But as a result, Hershey has never had a mayor or city government. Therefore, its residents have no legal machinery through which to petition street name changes.
Because of the expense of an election, then paying a mayor and city staff, it's unlikely the town of 20,000 will see change anytime soon.
As one long-time Turd Street resident put it, "Make no mistake, I'm grateful for the job security. It's just that, with all these tourists coming to town, it's embarrassing to give directions."
