Ashcroft Takes White House Leak;
Won't Go to the Head
Washington, DC | Attorney General John Ashcroft will look into allegations that the identity of a CIA operative was purposely leaked by the White House for political revenge.
A public relations firm was immediately retained by the Justice Department to investigate. "These are career professionals who know how to deal with negative publicity," Ashcroft assured.
"I doubt any leak investigation will take us to the Head," Ashcroft added, saying that President Bush is not under scrutiny. "Everyone knows he can't take a leak without Karl Rove's approval."
Bush addressed the controversy last week saying, "I want to know the truth. If anyone knows something about this they should put a note in the Suggestion Box. I'm closing my eyes now... is there a note yet? No? Aw c'mon ...how about now?"
The President went on to promise he would personally overlook the results of any investigation, and that his fundraising schedule would not be affected.
