Vandals Hack The Specious Report, Post Actual News
Washington, DC | On Friday, one or more hackers were able to bypass computer security at The Specious Report and replace bogus content with a legitimate news story.
The intrusion went unnoticed because the article was about President George W. Bush.
Publisher Earnest Motley admitted he was completely oblivious to the ingenious hoax over the weekend.
"Actually, it was a pretty funny piece," he said. "It was about how the President and Vice-President were both under pressure to explain past questionable business dealings, and how Bush had appointed a couple of his other crooked buddies to head the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Corporate Crime Task Force. You can imagine how horrified I was when I opened the Sunday paper and read that it was all true."
Heavily-trafficked websites are prime targets for publicity-seeking vandals, security experts say. Hackers in the past have penetrated sites owned by The New York Times, Yahoo and USA Today.
"I have no idea why they bothered with us," said Motley. "We only get about ten hits a week."
The website was shut down for approximately eight minutes on Sunday night to repair the defacement of the homepage. Motley says the website's security will not be upgraded.
