Small Town Cop Robs, Arrests Self
Wilkins Grove, KY | This quiet little town's only convenience store turned into a crime scene Wednesday night when a robber surprised the cashier.
Night clerk Doug Wilkins was working alone when he suddenly decided to take the contents of the cash draw and make a run for it.
But some quick thinking by Wilkins, who is the town's sheriff by day, thwarted the robbery. Sheriff Wilkins recounts the incident in his own words.
"The suspect was about halfway to the exit when I called out 'Police! Halt or I'll shoot!' That pretty much stopped me in my tracks. Actually, I didn't have my service revolver with me, but the maneuver distracted me long enough to get the cuffs on."
Wilkins continued, "You bet I froze when I heard that. I didn't want to get shot in the back from some crazy redneck cop. I dropped the cash and put my hands up."
Charges were dismissed the next day by Justice of the Peace Doug Wilkins because the money had been returned, and the arresting officer had neglected to Mirandize himself.
The store owner, Doug Wilkins, indicated he would be declared "Employee of the Month" after foiling the would-be robber.
