Dallas Kops Receive Keystone Award
Dallas, TX | Dallas Police Chief Terrell Bolton was presented with the annual Keystone Award this week for his department's handling of a November 7 truck hijacking incident.
Burnice Wilson, who had missed a court date that same week for a previous truck theft charge, took a semi trailer filled with lumber for a four-hour joy ride through South Dallas.
The incident prompted Top Kop Bolton to issue a "Code 100" which means police stand on the sidewalk and frantically wave their hands above their heads "by any means necessary."
Frequently crossing medians into oncoming traffic, the 18-wheeler eventually caught on fire leaving a trail of burning wood, exploding tires, and grass fires. The driver continued in a wide circular route through the neighborhood, smiling and waving back at police.
Wilson finally brought the flaming wreckage to a halt when he ran out of cigarettes. "It's a good thing he wasn't using a cell phone too, or he'd really be in trouble," Bolton stated.
Although no one was injured in the chase, the Chief announced he was setting up the "Code 100 Fund" to hire and train more police in the dangerous task of hand-waving.
"Someday we might have to face a well-organized terrorist attack." Boulton explained, "The city must be ready to do some serious waving. That truck could have been carrying jet fuel, or nuclear waste, or a load of anthrax. But right now we don't have nearly enough officers to stand at every intersection and wave their hands over their head."
The Chief added, "I just wish there had been a special hand-waving task force here back in 1963. We might have prevented that terrible tragedy."
Reached for comment, Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk insisted the incident did not prompt his decision to resign and move to Washington D.C. The Mayor announced plans to run for the Senate seat being made available by Phil Gramm's retirement.
