Pet Shelters Swamped with Unwanted Chias

San Diego, CA  |  Budget-strapped animal shelters nationwide are being overwhelmed with requests to take in Chia Pets which are "no longer cute."

Chia abandonment, a post-Christmas tragedy for years, has now reached such staggering levels that many cites have passed leniency ordinances for leaving one at a "safe haven" like the commmunity pound or Salvation Army.

Barney Potter, director of Animal Control for San Diego, says, "It's heartbreaking that so many people think Chias are cute and cuddly, but are totally unprepared for the long-term responsibility that comes with them."

Potter added, "We have the same problem after Easter with bunnies and baby chicks. And after Valentine's Day with gerbils."

When reached for comment, a representative from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) said, "It's a lump of clay, for christsake. Just throw the damn thing in a trash can."
